Always in awe of scientists' creativity and their innovative data collection methods. Ever heard of Turtle Dogs? Last week, John Rucker and his four boykin spaniels tracked Ornate Box Turtles in northern Iroquois County sand prairies. With their help and radio telemetry, researchers captured numerous turtles, aiding crucial data collection to assess the health of the populations and inform conservation efforts of this state threatened species. The project is spearheaded by the Population and Community Ecology (PaCE) Lab at the Illinois Natural History Survey (INHS), in collaboration with the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center. Special thanks to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for funding this vital project through a State Wildlife Grant.

Across cultures, the Moon has served as a fundamental timekeeping tool, guiding humanity's understanding of months and seasons. 🌕 Precolonial skygazers who laid out the Indigenous “Mississippian-period” city of Cahokia, around the year 1050 CE, were deeply attuned to celestial movements of the Moon, Sun, and Milky Way. In anticipation of the #TotalEclipse on Apr. 8, state archaeologist and ISAS director Tim Pauketat delves into the moon's influence on ancient civilizations in a new blog post, "Heavenly history and the moon." Don't miss it! Read it here: https://loom.ly/aa18Zz4. #archaeology #research #academiccommunity #researchbreakthroughs
